Administration
The Oratorio Society of Charlottesville-Albemarle is a nonprofit corporation in which the management is dependent on volunteers. We are governed by a
Board of Directors. The synergy of support by the community and efforts of chorus members have worked together to enable us to strive for higher and higher standards as the years go by - always seeking to bring large choral works to our audience that they would otherwise not experience.
Board of Directors
The Society's Board of Directors consists of 15-20 members, who serve three-year terms. The conductor and the Musical Director Emeritus are ex officio members. Board members bring significant experience that enables them to provide oversight to the Society's mission and activities.
Chorus members are welcome and encouraged to serve on Board committees.
Committees of the Board
Chorus Development:
... seeks to build comraderie among choristers.
Concert Management:
... sees that all bases are covered in preparation for concerts. Tasks include coordinating teams to set up and remove equipment from the concert venue, assembling volunteers to act as ushers (particularly important when seating is reserved).
Endowment:
... deals with long-range plans for generating a base for support of the Oratorio Society above and beyond covering costs through ticket sales and annual contributions.
(Financial) Development:
... keeps tabs, along with the Treasurer, of our financial picture. This committee maintains a database of information about the Oratorio Society that includes present and former members, board members, musical directors, instrumentalists, not to mention present and past donors. With this data, we are in a better position to have targeted mailings about the group.
Nominations:
... drafts the slate of Oratorio Society members who agree to fill vacancies arising from the completion of Board members' terms or due to resignations that occur from time to time. Such a slate is subject to approval by a majority of the Board at a time before the annual turnover dictated by the cycle of terms of the members. Consideration is given to the expertise needed by the composite representation of Board members so that the functions necessary for the successful operation of the Oratorio Society are covered.
Publicity:
... takes responsibility for production of posters, fliers, and other mechanisms for advertisement of the Oratorio Society to the community. This shall include a focus on upcoming concerts or functions required to cover the needs of other committees, e.g. assisting the endowment committee with the presentation of this endeavor to the community at large as well as to target audiences.
Repertoire:
... responsible for drafting proposals for programs. Preparation for future programs, with consideration for cost of music, instrumentalists, etc.. For example, proposed programs should be able the cover their costs as nearly as possible
Section Leaders:
... are not a "meeting" committee, but as a unit these individuals are the liaisons between the chorus and the Board.
Web Site:
... examines the function of the website as our face to the community. Not only does the website provide publicity, ticket sales, program advertisement, etc., it functions as a means of communication and a source of comraderie for the Society's members. Efforts are underway to consider how the website may assist the function of the committees listed above. It is the webmaster's responsibility to see that information is factually correct, among other duties.
